Whether you’re looking for a fantastic photo backdrop or you’re excited to learn more about the area’s history, this lighthouse is sure to delight.

A Lighthouse Rich in History

The Sanibel Lighthouse can be located at 112 Periwinkle Way and while it remains a popular modern-day attraction, its story stems all the way back to 1884. This was when the lighthouse was constructed, making it one of the very first of its kind along the Gulf Coast. The need for a guiding light on the shoreline was one that had been voiced by residents since 1878. The delay in construction came from the fact that building such an impressive structure would require $50,000 and this wasn’t granted until 1883. Once funding was in place, it only took three months to complete the 98-foot structure that first lit up the skies on August 20, 1884. The lighthouse was originally manned by Dudley Richardson who maintained the kerosene oil-energized lighting system that required the keeper to trek up 127 stairs to fill. Today, visitors can enjoy views of the Sanibel Lighthouse from its place in Lighthouse Beach Park.
