The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village is located at 950 Dunlop Road in Sanibel and is open from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday each week. This unique living history museum is a family-friendly stop to add to your itinerary when you’re looking to learn more about authentic pioneer life. In total, the museum and village host nine restored buildings to explore that were moved from their original sites, giving guests the feeling that they’ve truly stepped back in time. The museum and village were founded back in 1984 as a way to both preserve and share Sanibel’s history and today, remains a fan-favorite stop among visitors.

What to See While You’re Here

You’ll want to be sure to take your time to explore all nine historic buildings at this museum and village—each of which has an important story to tell. The Caretaker’s Cottage dates back to 1925, while the Shore Haven house shows what life was like in the area in 1924. Take a stroll through the Sanibel School House and see how education was set up in 1896 before checking out the Rutland House dating back to 1913. The Sanibel Packing House from 1900 is sure to inspire while a tour of the 1926 post office is always memorable. The Burnap Cottage is a highlight of residential architecture from 1898 while Miss Charlotta’s Tea Room is a gem from 1926. Be sure to explore the Old Bailey General Store when you drop by and don’t leave without spending some time in the Morning Glories Cottage from 1925 as well. Admission to the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village is $15 for non-members and special tours are available upon request at 10:30 am depending on docent availability. Self-guided tours complete with audio recordings are available to enjoy in every building on-site.
